Wow, January 2025 🎉 … That came fast!

Now that it’s January it’s time for Middle of Year (MOY) benchmarking assessments. 📊

Not doing MOY assessments? 🤔

Here’s why I think Universal Literacy Screening three times a year is worth the effort in elementary settings:

  • Feel like everything rests on your shoulders? Standardized assessments help lighten the load by showing you exactly how your students are progressing. 🌟
  • Worried about struggling students? A screener helps you spot who needs extra support early. Research shows that kids in the bottom 10th percentile tend to stay there without intervention.
  • Small gaps matter in K-2. The difference between average and struggling students is often subtle. Without a screener, it’s hard to catch and address those needs in time.

Getting ready to start? 📝

Here are some things to think about as you prep:

  • Scheduling conflicts: Are there pre-planned school events or interruptions to consider?
  • Timing: Will you screen a little each day for a couple of weeks or block a full day to get it all done?
  • Logistics: Where will the screening happen? How many teachers will help?
  • Materials prep: Who’s handling printing and compiling?
  • Data management: Will results go into a database, spreadsheet, or something else? Who’s in charge of entering it?

After the data is collected… 🎯
